Lecture 1
Comments on the first lesson with Despoina
The basic breakdown for me of the lecture was talk about tools for environmental design and techniques from films as well as general shape principals.
I have heard of many things that were discussed in the lecture before, nevertheless I thought it was important to refresh my memory and hear another perspective about shapes and objects in the scene weather it is applied in film or in VR experiences. I am a big fan of symbolism, so I like the idea of storytelling through visual attributes rather than dialog, monolog, and other forms of audible or written narration. I also appreciated Despoina’s comment on the fact that those “rules” or “conventions” are either due to human instinct or social bias like girls are associated with pink and round shapes and boys are blue and are associated with square shapes which usually indicate stability and masculinity. I agree with her idea of breaking those stereotypes and changing the unnecessary way of instinctual thinking. Another idea that I took away is the idea of left is bad and right is good. I found myself constantly noticing this technique in movies after the lecture. Composing the scene like that can be difficult in VR but I think it is worth thinking about and maybe trying to apply it or keeping in mind the possibility of dividing the space in a mindful way.
