Patient Education Caesarian section VR

The Progress

  • First Step. After outlining the main topic and the idea I immediately ran into problems. I am lacking the knowledge of how to firstly make a Caesarian Section wound closure in real life and secondly in VR. I did not want to make a cooking mama-style project where it is fun and uneducational, so I pivoted.
  • Second Step. The pivot was quite dramatic. I decided instead of making a training simulation (it seemed unrealistic and too advanced) I will make a patient education project on the pre-care and post-care of a c-section, this way I can give relevant and useful information for either patients or people who are generally interested. Now it was time to make creative decisions. Able and Eric helped me a lot with opening and broadening the mental limitations I’ve put since I wanted to keep to a more medical “boring” framework.
  • Third Step. I have reached out to a couple of people for collaboration and actually, Nika (a Russian feminist activist, illustrator, and YouTuber), who I support on Patreon has a tier where you can ask her to draw you anything once a month. And I used that to reach out to her and tell her about my project and a character concept art. After talking for a bit she sent me (Figure 4) and I did not think it fit stylistically so after discussing the style and the plot a bit she sends me this absolute gem with a pregnant cat toy (Figure 5).
  • Fourth Step. I have been generally working on establishing roles in my team and so far I have talked with a person I used to work with at Imperial who told me that he would pull some contacts and maybe get me to collaborate with Imperial Medicine which would be huge. Before Christmas, I am planning to go over there and talk with some people about the potential of this happening. Another person from Imperial who I used to work with came by to York and I told him the idea I have and he said he would be more than willing to help out with anything starting with modeling and or coding.
  • Fifth Step. I made a project brief outlining the main elements of the experience. And further steps. It will be evolving over time. I have attached it at the top of this post.
  • Sixth Step. I have been story Boarding in Shapes XR. (Video 1)
  • Seventh Step. I have reached out to a friend of mine in Moscow who works as an XR creative manager in one of the leading newspaper companies and he has agreed to make shaders for my project. So I would be asking him soon to look into how to make a transitional shader.
